Team problems

Outdoor and adventurous activity gives a group a problem it cannot solve alone — crossing a space with limited equipment, or completing an orienteering course in a time. The physical task is the excuse; listening, planning and dividing roles are what is actually being learned.

Navigating

Orient the map so it matches the ground — turn the map, not your head. Use the compass to find north, identify a feature you can see, and locate yourself. Then choose a route and name a CATCHING FEATURE, something you will hit if you go too far, so you know when you have overshot.

Risk

A RISK ASSESSMENT names what could go wrong, how likely it is, how bad it would be, and what reduces it. Cold, getting lost, slipping, and dehydration cover most of it outdoors. The point is not to avoid all risk, which would mean staying indoors, but to know which ones you have accepted.

Six people must cross a 'river' using four mats, with nobody touching the floor. Try it by everyone talking at once: chaos. Now do it properly. STOP and listen. AGREE a plan out loud. ALLOCATE roles — two movers, one counter, one watching for feet touching down. ACT. Then REVIEW: what worked, what would you change? The review is where the learning is, and it is the step groups always skip.
