Compare ideas, not chapters
The weak plan does Text A for two pages, Text B for two pages, and "compares" in a final paragraph. The strong plan finds three IDEAS the question points at — say, power, its cost, its collapse — and examines both texts inside each idea. Every paragraph holds both texts.
The thesis carries the essay
Open by answering the question in one arguable sentence: "Both poets present power as self-destroying, but where Ozymandias mocks it from the ruins, My Last Duchess lets it condemn itself in its own voice." Everything after defends that sentence.
The connective toolkit
Similarly · likewise · whereas · by contrast · while both · more starkly than. These are not decoration — each forces a genuine comparative claim. If a paragraph contains no connective, check whether it is really comparing.
A plan you could write from, in ten minutes
Question: how do the poets present power? Thesis, written first because everything serves it: "Both present power as self-defeating, but Shelley watches it decay from outside while Browning lets it incriminate itself from within." Then three idea-paragraphs, each with its opening sentence already drafted. One, the claim to permanence: "Both poems set a boast against the evidence that outlived it." Two, the voice: "Where Shelley reports the tyrant at two removes, Browning hands him the microphone." Three, what survives: "In both, the art outlasts the man who commissioned it — but only one of the poems seems to find that funny." That is the whole plan, and it took four sentences. Writing the topic sentences at planning time is what stops paragraph three drifting into summary, which is where most comparative essays are lost.
When the texts genuinely disagree
The best comparative paragraphs are not "both texts show X". They are "both texts reach for X, and one of them does not believe it". Where two writers part company, say so plainly and explain what the difference is FOR — a poet writing after a war and one writing before it are not disagreeing by accident. A named, explained difference scores higher than a strained similarity.
