Making the same thing twice
For most of history every object was made individually, so no two were identical and a broken part had to be made again from scratch. INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS — components made accurately enough to swap between products — changed that, and made repair, mass production and the assembly line possible. Almost every product you own depends on it.
Standards you never notice
A STANDARD is an agreement that everyone builds to the same specification: screw threads, paper sizes, shipping containers, plug shapes, USB connectors. Standards are invisible when they work and infuriating when they are missing — which is why the same charger fitting several devices felt like an invention when it was really an agreement.
Why an idea spreads
Good design ideas spread when they solve a real problem cheaply enough to copy. The shipping container is a metal box, and it reorganised world trade because it fitted lorries, trains and ships without unpacking. The bicycle, the flat-pack fitting and the touchscreen spread the same way. Being clever is not enough; it has to be worth copying.
Before standardisation, every musket was hand-fitted and its parts fitted only that musket — a broken lock meant a gunsmith. Once parts were made to a standard, any lock fitted any musket, so guns could be assembled by unskilled workers and repaired in the field. The same idea gives us screw threads, paper sizes and shipping containers. No single invention; a decision that everyone would build to the same measurements.
