Every Arabic letter exits from a known point (makhraj). The classical map — Ibn al-Jazari counts seventeen points — groups them into five regions: al-jawf (the empty space, for the long vowels), al-halq (the throat: ء ه ع ح غ خ), al-lisan (the tongue, the largest family), ash-shafatan (the lips: ف ب م و), and al-khayshum (the nasal passage, home of ghunnah). You do not memorise the map to recite; you consult it when a letter goes wrong.
