The four assessment objectives
Art & Design · GCSE · The School
What the four are
AO1 DEVELOP ideas through investigation, showing critical understanding of sources. AO2 REFINE by experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes. AO3 RECORD ideas, observations and insights relevant to your intentions. AO4 PRESENT a personal and meaningful response using visual language. Each is worth 25%.
The trap
Nearly everyone over-invests in AO4 — the final piece — because it is the visible thing. But it is a quarter of the marks. A beautiful final piece with thin development, no experimentation and no recording caps out around a middle grade, and every teacher has watched it happen.
Planning across all four
Artist research that CHANGES your work (AO1). Media experiments with annotated outcomes (AO2). Observational drawing and photography throughout, not just at the start (AO3). A final piece that clearly grew from all of it (AO4). If someone can trace your final piece backwards through the book, you are in the top band.
AO1 develop through investigation and artist links. AO2 refine through experimenting with media. AO3 record ideas and observations. AO4 present a personal, informed response. Each is worth 25%. So a portfolio with a stunning final piece and no artist research, no media experiments and thin recording scores at most 25% plus whatever the outcome earns for AO4 — a fail, with a beautiful painting in it.
