750 CE · The Umayyad Caliphate

The Abbasid Revolution ends Umayyad rule in the east. The last Umayyad caliph, Marwan II, is killed. The Abbasids establish their capital in Iraq. However, one Umayyad prince — Abd al-Rahman I — escapes to Spain and establishes a lasting Umayyad emirate in Cordoba, which later becomes one of the most advanced cities on earth.
