The errors that change meaning

Quran Recitation with Tajweed · a self-paced course lesson

LAHN JALĪ (clear error) breaks a letter or a vowel in a way that changes the word or its grammar — reading أَنْعَمْتَ as أَنْعَمْتُ changes "You bestowed" to "I bestowed". Scholars treat this class as obligatory to correct. LAHN KHAFĪ (hidden error) breaks a tajweed refinement — a short ghunnah, an imprecise madd — noticed by the trained ear, and correcting it is a perfection rather than an obligation.
