The tashahhud, word by word

Prayer Arabic (Salah & Du'a) · a self-paced course lesson

At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat: the greetings, the prayers, and the pure words — all belong to Allah. Tahiyyat were the salutations Arabs offered kings; the opening of the tashahhud takes every form of honouring and assigns it, all of it, to Allah alone. You begin the sitting by putting royalty in its true place.
