Marking the same day each year
Birthdays, Eid, New Year, Remembrance Day. Some mark something happy, some mark something sad, and some do both at once. Marking a date every year is a way of keeping a memory alive for people who were not there.
Why we remember
We remember to say thank you, to stay close to people who came before us, and so we do not forget what was hard. Ask a grown-up which day matters most in your family and why. The 'why' is usually a story.
Different places, different days
A child in Türkiye, one in Nigeria and one in Britain will mark some of the same days and some completely different ones. None of them is doing it wrong. Which days a place remembers tells you a great deal about that place's story.
Ask everyone in the room to name one day their family marks every year. You will get birthdays, Eid, Christmas, Diwali, Remembrance Day, Independence Days from several countries, and days particular to one family. Put them all on one calendar. Some are shared by everyone, some by a few, some by one person — and that mixture is what a community's memory actually looks like.
