A tropical rainforest is layered. The EMERGENTS are scattered giants above everything else. The CANOPY is a dense continuous roof holding most of the wildlife. Below it the UNDER-CANOPY, then the shaded SHRUB LAYER, then the forest floor, which is dark and surprisingly bare because so little light reaches it.

Adaptation and the nutrient cycle

Plants have drip-tip leaves to shed heavy rain, buttress roots to brace shallow-rooted giants, and lianas climbing to reach light. Crucially the soil is POOR: nutrients are held in the vegetation, not the ground, and are recycled rapidly by rapid decomposition. That is why clearing the forest leaves land that farms badly within a few years.

Deforestation, weighed

Causes include commercial logging, cattle ranching, soy and palm plantations, mining, road building and subsistence farming. Effects include biodiversity loss, soil erosion, disrupted water cycles and released carbon. An answer that only condemns misses the economics — debt, employment and development pressures — and a strong answer weighs those against the environmental costs rather than ignoring either.

Rainforest soil is thin and poor; almost all the nutrients are in the living trees and are recycled within weeks by rapid decomposition. Clear and burn a plot and the ash gives one or two good harvests. By year three yields collapse, because the nutrient store left with the trees, and heavy rain has leached what remained. The farmer clears another plot. That cycle, not greed, is what drives the pattern of deforestation.

Why rainforest soil is poor

This is counter-intuitive and questions exploit it. The rainforest is enormously productive, so students assume rich soil; in fact almost all the nutrients are held in the living biomass, not in the ground. Litter falling to the forest floor decomposes very fast in the heat and humidity and is taken straight back up by shallow roots, so the store in the soil is small and the cycle is quick. Heavy rainfall leaches what remains. Clear the trees and the nutrient store leaves with them — which is why cleared land often supports crops for only a few years.

Naming a real place

Case study detail separates a mid-band answer from a top-band one, and 'the Amazon' is not detail. Name the country and the specific driver: cattle ranching and soya in Brazil, palm oil in Indonesia and Malaysia, logging and mining roads that open access for others afterwards. Give a figure with the year attached, and say where it came from. Then link the driver to the effect you are asked about, rather than listing effects generally. One well-evidenced example carried right through an answer beats three named in passing.
