Prophet Isma'il (Ishmael)
c. 19th century BCE (same era as Ibrahim; Islamic tradition).
Isma'il (Ishmael) was the son of Ibrahim and Hajar and a prophet and messenger. He was the son whom Allah commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice; when both submitted and Ibrahim laid him down, Allah called out that the vision was fulfilled and ransomed him with a great sacrifice (a ram). He grew up in the valley of Makkah; the well of Zamzam had sprung for his mother when she was in need. With his father he raised the foundations of the House (the Ka'bah) and prayed for a nation Muslim to Allah from their descendants. From his line came the Arabs and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Quran describes him as true to his promise and as a messenger and prophet.
