The Dome of the Rock is completed

Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan completes the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem — the oldest surviving monument of Islamic architecture, its octagon and golden dome crowning the Haram ash-Sharif. Its mosaic inscriptions are among the earliest datable written verses of the Quran on a building.
