In 8 AH (630 CE) the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah at the head of ten thousand — the city that had starved, tortured and expelled his people — and took it almost without bloodshed. Standing before the defeated who expected the era’s customary massacre, he asked what they thought he would do, heard their appeal to his nobility, and answered: go, for you are free. The general amnesty included men who had mutilated his own uncle’s body. The idols around the Kaaba fell; the vengeance did not come. Historians of any faith mark it as one of history’s rarest victories: one defined by what the victor declined to do.
