Cairo is founded — and al-Azhar

969–970 CE · The Abbasid Caliphate & Golden Age

The Fatimids found al-Qahira, "the Victorious", beside old Fustat, and the next year lay the foundations of al-Azhar. The mosque’s teaching circles grow into one of the Muslim world’s most enduring centres of scholarship — over a thousand years of continuous teaching, and today the most widely cited seat of Sunni learning.
