Independence Movements and the Nakba

1947–1948 CE · The Modern Era

Pakistan is created as an independent Muslim state in 1947. In 1948, the creation of the State of Israel displaces approximately 700,000 Palestinian Muslims and Christians — the Nakba (catastrophe). The Arab-Israeli conflict shapes Muslim-world politics for the rest of the century. Jordan, Indonesia, and most Muslim majority nations gain independence in the 1940s–60s.
