The last Muslim king, Muhammad XII (Boabdil), surrenders Granada to Ferdinand and Isabella on 2 January 1492 — the same year Columbus sailed to the Americas. The subsequent Inquisition forcibly expelled or converted all remaining Muslims and Jews. An era of extraordinary civilisation ends.
