The Christian kingdoms of northern Spain begin the slow Reconquista (reconquest). Toledo falls in 1085, Cordoba in 1236. Muslim scholars flee to North Africa and the East, carrying with them thousands of manuscripts. The Islamic libraries of Spain are estimated to have had over one million books.
