Al-Wahid — The Only One
الْواحِدُ
Name 66 of the ninety-nine. The Unique, The One without a partner
Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is Al-Waahid (in Arabic: ٱلْوَٰحِدُ), the One and only God.
The root
From the root waw-ha-dal (و ح د), which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to be one, to be made one, to be called one, to be unique, singular, to be one apart from others.
Reflection
As we discussed in Al-Qahhar, the pairing of Al-Wahid with Al-Qahhar is meant to instill humility. No matter how great you may think you are, we will all be held for our transgressions. Allah reminds us He is the One who dominates all others and does so alone.
