Officials
A referee or umpire applies the rules in real time, usually with an incomplete view and no replay. Assistants, timekeepers and scorers support them. Understanding how hard the job is changes how you react to a decision — and every player who has refereed once behaves better afterwards.
Competition formats
A LEAGUE plays everyone and rewards consistency. A KNOCKOUT is decided by single games and rewards peaking on the day. A ROUND ROBIN followed by knockout combines both. The format shapes the tactics: a team that only needs a draw plays a completely different game.
Sportsmanship, and gamesmanship
SPORTSMANSHIP is playing fairly and respecting opponents and officials. GAMESMANSHIP is bending the spirit while staying inside the letter — time-wasting, feigning injury, distraction. It is not usually against the rules, which is exactly why it is a question about character rather than about law.
Watch a referee for five minutes and tally every DECISION, not every whistle. Play on despite contact: a decision. Advantage played: a decision. A quiet word instead of a card: a decision. A whistle: a decision. The whistles are usually a small minority. Good officiating is mostly the decisions that keep the game moving — which is why a referee you did not notice probably had a good game.
