Locating the big features
Africa: the Sahara across the north, the Nile running north to the Mediterranean, the Great Rift Valley down the east, the Congo basin at the centre. Asia: the Himalayas, the Ganges and the Yangtze, the Gobi. Russia: the Urals dividing it from Europe, Siberia beyond. The Middle East: the Arabian Peninsula, the Tigris and Euphrates, the Gulf.
Why people live where they do
Population follows water and workable land. Egypt is mostly desert, so almost everyone lives along the Nile. The Gangetic plain is among the most densely populated places on earth because the soil and water support intensive farming. Siberia is enormous and nearly empty because the climate makes farming and building expensive.
Against the single story
A region is not one thing. Africa holds 54 countries, over a thousand languages, cities larger than London and areas with almost nobody. Asia contains the wettest and driest inhabited places on earth. Any sentence beginning 'Africa is…' or 'Asia is…' is almost certainly wrong, and noticing that is a geographical skill rather than a manners one.
Cairo to Cape Town is about 7,200 km. London to Delhi is about 6,700 km. So Africa is longer than the distance from Britain to India — and inside it are the Sahara, the Congo rainforest, the Ethiopian highlands, Mediterranean Cape Town and the Kalahari. Fifty-four countries, over a thousand languages. Any sentence beginning "in Africa, people…" is about to be wrong somewhere.
