Blue and green
Spin a globe and look: the blue parts are water and the green and brown parts are land. Put your finger down at random ten times and count how often you land on blue. Most of the time — because most of the Earth is water.
Sea, river, lake
The SEA is huge and salty. A RIVER is moving water that flows to the sea. A LAKE is water with land all around it. If you have been to any of them, say which one and what it was like.
Living by water
People build towns beside rivers and by the coast, because water gives you drinking water, food, and a way to travel. Look at a map of Britain and see how many towns sit on a river — it is almost all of them, and that is not an accident.
Close your eyes, spin a globe, and put one finger on it. Open your eyes: is your finger on land or water? Do it ten times and tally. Most people land on blue six or seven times out of ten, because about seven-tenths of the Earth's surface is water. Your tally is a real measurement of the planet, made with a finger.
