Khushuʿ: keeping attention in prayer

Khushuʿ is the heart's stillness and humility before Allah, showing in the body as calm. The Quran opens the description of successful believers with it: those who are humbly submissive in their prayer (23:1–2). It is not an emotional high, and it is not the absence of every stray thought — the Prophet ﷺ himself taught what to do when thoughts intrude, which tells you they do.
