Zakat, fasting and Hajj — the adult obligations
Adult Islamic Education · a self-paced course lesson
Zakat is due on wealth held above the NISAB for one lunar year, at 2.5%. Count: cash and bank balances, gold and silver, business stock, and money owed to you that you expect back. Do not count: your home, your car, personal belongings, or the tools of your trade. Subtract immediate debts. The nisab is the value of 85g of gold or 595g of silver — most scholars advise the silver figure, as it is lower and helps more recipients.
